Five set battle between Poland and Italy was the highlight of the final day of group stage at the women’s EuroVolley. The game finished with a victory of the group B’s hosts.
As Poland and Slovakia couldn’t meet in the round of 16, the Poles fought for any victory, which would let them not to battle Russia in the first play-off game. After an easy win in the first set, they lost all powers and Italy won next two, ensuring themselves a first place in the group. Poland came back in the fourth set and also won a tie-break, giving them theoretically easier rival in the next stage of competition. The other game in Łódź finished with 3-0 victory of Ukraine over Portugal.
In group A Serbia and Turkey played for the first place with the world champions winning 3-1. Earlier Bulgaria won 3-0 against Finland, securing a third place. In Budapest, as expected, Azerbaijan won with Romania and Netherlands with Hungary – both in three sets. In Bratislava Switzerland defeated Belarus 3-1 while Russia beated hosts 3-0.
