Both field hockey teams from India qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Their triumphs in the two-match battles were celebrated at their home stadium in Bhubaneswar.
Women’s team started with a strong victory over the USA – 5-1 seemed to be quite a safe advantage before the second game. However, the Americans managed to tie the aggregate, leading 4-0 at the halftime. The goal of the captain of the Indians, Rani in the 48th minute was the one that gave Olympic quota to her team.
Men’s team’s rival was the team of Russia. After two victories – 4-2 and 7-1 – Men in Blue secured themselves a 21th Olympic appearance.
For the women’s team it will be just their third participation at the Olympics – after Moscow 1980 and Rio 2016. Men’s team since it debut in Amsterdam 1928 missed only one Games – Beijing 2008.
