The Olympic Flame Handover Ceremony has been held in Athens on Thursday. In the next week it will start its way over the host country of Tokyo 2020 Games.
The ceremony was held without the audience. Also the President of Tokyo 2020 Yoshiro Mori decided to send the video-link only instead of coming to Greece. All that because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The Flame brought by Eleftherios Petrounias and Katerina Stefanidi was lit by the high priestess in the cauldron in the middle of Panathinaiko Stadium, the main venue of the 1896 Olympics before being handed by the President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee Spyros Capralos to Naoko Imoto – 1996 Olympian in swimming who is living in Greece, working for the UNICEF.
The plane carrying the flame to Japan will land in Matsushima air base tomorrow, while the Torch Relay is scheduled to start on 26th March in Fukushima – the region devastated by earthquake and tsunami in 2011.
